What's New for Aug. 23-26

The current minipoll asks what the longest (from start to finish) it has taken you to paint, base and flock a DBA army.

First of a three part series featuring the armies of Peter Wort.  Part one has a Roman theme and includes both Polybian Romans and Early Imperial Romans, plus the Roman signal tower and this inspired "Golden Arches" camps.

Captured Neldoreth's Burning Tower camp, featuring pillaging Vikings introducing some Irish monks to the concept of a barbeque.

Bjorn Floderus has updated his Normans of Stockholm blogsite with galleries featuring his new Tlinglit (Northwestern Indians) and Greco-Bactrians.  Bjorn is also asking for Fanatici input on what army he should paint next.

For the calendar, Blake Radzetsky sends news that he'll be running two DBA and a HOTT tournament on Sept. 13 at ProtoCon 10 in College Park, Texas.

If you are looking for some literary inspiration, check out In Parenthesis, a site with translations of tales from the Old Norse, the Arthurian Cycle, China and Japan, the Medieval Period (country-specific) and even Malayan.

Neldoreth has done some masterly brushwork on shields for his new Early Russian army.

Barry Scarlett's latest BUA/Camp masterpiece is this Motte and Bailey.

And as if you needed more inspiration, here at YouTube, the third in a series of DBA Camp inspiration videos featuring the work of various Fanatici contributors:

George Wyllie (aka Antigonos) has launched his "Only a Wargame" blogsite, which currently features his Polybian Romans.

Paul Potter asked after my Wends, so here is a new gallery.

Sergio Perez sends word from Spain:  "The El Ultimo Tercio Wargames Club will organize a open DBA tournament in Madrid (Spain) on 13th September. It is called the Tartessos Tournament, with six rounds. This year there has been a DBA championship running in Madrid involving many of the wargames clubs and this is the final. The participants are from all over the country, foreign participants will be well received. For the next day, Sunday 14th September, we'll prepare a open Super BBDBA Giant Battle for all, participants and visitants, everyone wants to play. It will be the battle of Cannas, and depending of the number of players, the table can measured 6 meters. For more information in Spanish you can visit our website,  or community or English-speakers can contact me."

Aug. 7-10:  Andrew McLaren does a doubletake on the Early and Later Hebrews, featuring 1/72 plastics.

I was staring at a deck of cards and wondering how I could use them in DBA, which prompted this "just for fun" variant rule - DBA Fate Cards.

Keith McNelly sends word of a DBA tourney being held at TagCon in Timaru, New Zealand on 23-24 August.

Around the blogsphere, Mike Johnson has a great Medieval German Camp featuring a Baeuda pavillion and a few ladies chatting up a guard.  Mike Porter has part 3 of his Historicon Update.  Tony Aguilar has a nice-looking new Early Armenian army made up with 15mm Old Glory figs. Jack Farrow has a gallery up featuring his Classical Indians.  Elsewhere, David Schlanger has posted results and highlights from the Historicon Tony Bath Big Battle Tourney.

Aug. 3-6:   Lots of DBA coming up on the calendar including the 8th Annual HMGS-GL Big Battle Tournament (16 Aug.), the Southern Battle Gamer's Historical Competition (17 Aug.), Advance the Colors (12-14 Sept.), De Bellis Vasingtonium (20 Sept.), Mother of all Battles (MOAB) (4-6 Oct.) and VikingCon in Copenhagen (11 Oct), plus planning is underway for Fall'In (7-9 Nov.).

The eyecandy starts with the latest 1/72 armies from Andrew McLaren and Reinhard Sabel.  Andrew's is New Kingdom Egyptian featuring Atlantic figures.  Reinhard did his Picts with Redbox, Italeri, and Airfix.

Greg Kelleher and Mark Baker collaborated on this well-executed Medieval Village BUA.

Mike Demana's latest commission camp project was this nicely conceived General's Visit to the Elephant pens done for Rob Runnels.

Fillipo at DBA Italia sends news of two new DBA army galleries from the master Marco Boetti.  First up is Marco's Early Muslim N. Africa and Sicily followed by his Galatians, including this R-rated mini-masterpiece:

Stephane Fontaine's latest gallery features Sylvain Desharbes' Mongol Conquest.

More Historicon highlights from Tony Aguilar's great montage video and blog reports by DiceManRick and Mike Porter.  Inspired by Tony's use of Animoto, I created these short videos featuring DBA camps.   Blame the fuzziness on my original photos, not the service.  With Animoto, you can do a 30 second video for free and publish it directly to your Myspace or YouTube.   If you've got a digital camera, this is a great free tool for highlighting your events or showing off your latest project.

Martin Stephenson passed on the following exciting news:  "Vexillia are pleased to announced the release of the first packs in our brand new range of 15 mm miniatures covering the nations of medieval Eastern Europe in the 15th century. The range has been sculpted by Clibinarium to match both Mirliton and Essex Miniatures and marks a major commitment by Vexillia to this oft neglected, but fascinating, period.  The first releases (available Sept. 1) are period infantry suitable for many nations of Eastern Europe."

At TMP, Khurasan offers a sneak peak of their Bosporan Greek Heavy Foot.  Also lots of new product news in 25/28mm featured recently at TMP, including Artizan's Ancient World personality figs, a Roman Testudo, Ballista and Scorpion from Warlord Games, the sale of Kingmaker Miniatures to Curtey's, new Mayans from Bears Dean Miniatures, a new Anglo-Saxon range from Foundry, plus a set of 28mm Beowulf and Companions miniatures from Eureka that I saw at Historicon and would make an outstanding addition to most period armies.

July 27-Aug. 2:  I'll start out the eyecandy with this shot of Paul Hannah's Middle-eastern (Ottoman Turk) Pavilion camp, with simulated campfire.

The balance of this update features these pictoral highlights and eyecandy shots of camps taken at Historicon 2008, with special thanks to Robert Hanks and Don Ray who traveled great distances with their prize camps to participate.

As a pre-Feudal Scots fan, I was drooling over Robert Hanks take on Dunsinane Castle, featuring the hard-hearted Lady MacBeth as camp follower.  The "home camp" is accompanied by an "away camp" featuring sheep grazing atop a hill.  Robert added this Birnam Wood Barker Marker to complete the Shakespearean theme.

Don Ray brought his Spartacan Revolt army to compete in the Spartacus event, along with this dominating Spartacus on Vesuvius camp, which doubles as a BUA.

Don also displayed his excellent Tsimshian (NW Indian) plank house camp/BUA complete with totem poll and integral littoral waterway.

I don't usually endorse a product here at Fanaticus unless I really like it.  At Historicon, I saw these DBA-sized hills by War Torn Worlds

July 20-26: Speaking of Historicon, this may be the last update I can squeeze in this week before departing for Lancaster.  Fortunately, I have lots of goodies to hold you over, starting off with Paul Potter's Wends, along with a Wendish Idol Wagon camp and a Baltic Wilderness Barker-Marker.

Neldoreth has army notes featuring the Early Russians to accompany his latest gallery.

Andrew McLaren's third gallery features his Hyksos.

Simon Bargery returns after long absence with a new gallery featuring 25mm Nubians by Newline Designs.

Ed Zwilling and daughter put together this Stonehenge BUA to go with his forthcoming Arthurians and Saxons from Splintered Light.

Barry Scarlett's scratchbuilding eyecandy continues with this beaucolic Dark Ages/Medieval village BUA.

The Diceman Rich Baier invites visitors to check out Steve Parillo's scratch-built Viking camp on his blogsite.  I'd love to get some close-ups of this camp, which features Viking raiders sacking a monastery, for the Fanaticus gallery,

Peter Wort offers up an illustrated guide to painting Early Germans, plus links to pictures of an inspired Roman camp, Celtic henge and Hillfort BUA.

Contemplating Canute lead me to put together this set of notes for the Anglo-Danes.

I'll have a new army gallery from Simon Bargery in the next update...for now, just a note to let you know that Simon's "Confused General" figure in 25mm is still available, through Bolt Action Miniatures.

Baueda has released its long awaited (by me) Viking tent scenic;.here's hoping a good supply are available at Historicon.  Also, courtesy of Splintered Light, there will be new Khurasan miniatures and some DBA army packs available at Historicon as well.

Bob Mcleish offers up a well-executed Ottoman Turk army, which is also up for auction on Ebay.

Pietro Bello has returned to the web with his Petrus Pulcher's Miniatures site.  According to Pietro: "The website is dedicated to historical miniatures wargamers and collectors.  There are two main sections, one containing galleries of miniatures I painted for some customers and in my own collection, and one with photographic references in a walk-around style. There are also photos of my work in progress and a growing up list of useful links. It is not complete yet, I will upload lots of pictures in the next few weeks, especially those dedicated to the DBx armies I painted in the last few years."

At TMP is news of a new  Eureka 300 Club listing for Huaxtecs, the Mayan refugees with pointy hats and filed teeth who were mortal enemies of the Aztecs, but who for some reason didn't garner their own DBA army list.  I'd really like to add this army to my Mesoamerican collection, even if unofficial, and so invite Fanatici feedback on what would constitute an appropriate Huaxtec variant list.
